A Europe of Two Halves

Net migration into NUTS 3 Regions, 2001-2011

According to Eurostat, total population growth between 2001 and 2011 was modest at 3.8% in the EU-28 countries. The contribution of natural growth (births less deaths) to this figure was very small (just 0.4%), with most of the increase coming from net inward migration from outside the EU. As this map shows, patterns of migration varied significantly across the region.
