Tooth Eruption

Full Screen

My dentist has a great framed infographics poster on the wall of his operating room. It plots, in two parts, the results of a study of tooth eruptions. I have aproximately replicated the part showing primary teeth.

The infographic is good for many reasons. It is action packed and makes the data easy to read for novices. It does have an issue that bothers me: The range of [µ-1σ, µ+1σ] is drawn as a whole rectangle, which doesn’t reflect what normal distribution looks like.

I have partly built this as an experiment with a better representation of where the measured cases actually belong. There are other ways to do this, but the goal here was to indicate the statistical sizes, rather than presenting a very detailed view.
