This chart plots small multiples of area charts of the murder rate of the U.S. from 1960 to 2012 (source) into a tile grid map of states. Normally tile grid maps are used as choropleths, but if there is enough space per cell, why not plot something more elaborate?
This is an alternate version of the same chart but featuring the District of Columbia. Which, as you may see, is such an outlier that it flattens most other states. It’s also not a state.
